At first, I was a bit worried that Eva was going to be a brat. She records her thoughts in her diary as a little owl and explains her likes and dislikes, one of which is a girl in her class. When her brother leaves his stinky socks in her room, she calls him names and tends to complain a bit. By chapter 3, Eva starts thinking about more things than herself and wants to plan a Bloomtastic Festival. Her teacher approves the idea, and everyone is on board. The rest of the book explains how Eva tries to do everything herself, but when she can’t get it all done asks and accepts help to get it done by the deadline. In the end, everyone ends up helping, excusing some blunders, and having a really good time.
I had high hopes for this book series but didn’t love Eva’s personality. I felt it was very snooty until chapter three when she started thinking about the festival. This book is geared toward first and second-graders.
This adorable New York Times bestselling early chapter book series is perfect for young girls who love friendship stories starring animal characters!
Pick a book. Grow a Reader!
This series is part of Scholastic’s early chapter book line called Branches, which is aimed at newly independent readers. Eva Wingdale gets in over her head when she offers to organize a spring festival at school. Even with her best friend Lucy’s help, there is NO way she will get everything done in time. Will Eva have to ask Sue (a.k.a. Meanie McMeanerson) for help? Or will the festival have to be cancelled? This book is written as Eva’s diary — with Rebecca Elliott’s owl-dorable full-color illustrations throughout!
Rebecca Elliott has illustrated many children’s books, including Kiss, Kiss Good Night. She wrote and illustrated the New York Times bestselling Owl Diaries series, the Unicorn Diaries series, Just Because, and Zoo Girl, which was nominated for the Kate Greenaway Medal. She lives with her family in the countryside of Suffolk, England.
